Breaking Up The Pirate Craft

 


The Cambrian Daily Leader, published on the 8th July 1919, a photograph under the caption “Breaking Up The Pirate Craft”.  All those German U-boats, that surrendered at the end of the First World War, November 1918, were sent to various ship yards around the country.  Swansea received 19.

Which of the 19 U-boats that were sent to Swansea?

U-107 – Type U-93. Launched June 1917.  Surrendered 20th November 1918. Sank 6 ships totalling 24,663 tons and damaging 1 ship totalling 1,084 tons. Broken up at Swansea 1922.

U-43 – Type U-43. Launched September 1914.  Surrendered 20th November 1918. Sank 45 ships, totalling 114,323 tons.  Seized 2 ships as prizes, totalling 356 tons.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.

U-53 – Type U-51.  Launched December 1915.  Surrendered 21st November 1918.  Sunk 29 ships totalling 70,535 tons.  Damaged 4 ships, totalling 12,457 tons. Sunk 3 warships totalling 18,471 and damaged 1 warship totalling 1,250 tons.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.

UB-132 – Type UB III.  Surrendered 21st November 1918. Launched June 1918. Broken up at Swansea.

UB-62 – Type UB III.  Surrendered 21st November 1918. Launched May 1917.  Sunk 8 ships totalling 17,226 tons and damaged 1 ship totalling 7,300 tons.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.

U-164 – Type U-93.  Launched August 1918.  Surrendered 22nd November 1918.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.

U-24 – Type U-23. Surrendered 22nd November 1918.  Launched May 1913. Sunk 34 ships totalling 106,122 tons. Damaged 3 ships totalling 14,318 tons. Seized 1 ship as prize totalling 1,925 tons. Sunk 1 warship totalling 15,000 tons.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.

UC-105 – Type UC III.  Surrendered 22nd November 1918. Launched May 1918. Broken up at Swansea 1922.

UB-120 – Type UB-III.  Surrendered 24th November 1918.  Launched February 1918. Sunk 1 ship totalling 145 tons.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.

UB-67 – Type UB-IIII.  Surrendered 24th November 1918. Launched June 1917. Sunk 1 ship totalling 13,936 tons and sunk 1 warship totalling 810 tons.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.

UB-79 – Type UB-III.  Surrendered 26th November 1918.  Launched June 1917.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.

U-100 – Type U-57.  Surrendered 27th November 1918.  Launched February 1917. Sunk 10 ships totalling 34,505 tons and damaged 2 ships totalling 5,272 tons.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.

U-124 – Type UE-2.  Surrendered 1st December 1918.  Launched March 1918. Broken up at Swansea 1922.

U-53 – Type U-51. Surrendered 1st December 1918.  Launched February 1916.  Sunk 87 ships totalling 224,314 tons, damaged 10 ships totalling 46,339 tons and sunk 1 warship totalling 1,050 tons.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.

U-80 – Type UE-1. Surrendered 16th January 1919.  Launched April 1916. Sunk 26 ships totalling 49,905 tons and damaged 4 ships totalling 35,608 tons.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.

UB-49 – Type UB-III.  Surrendered 16th January 1919. Launched January 1917. Sunk 40 ships totalling 72,860 tons and damaging 7 ships totalling 31,556 tons.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.

UB-50 – Type UB-III.  Surrendered 16th January 1919. Launched January 1917.  Sunk 39 ships totalling 98,071 tons, damaging 7 ships totalling 25,172 tons and sunk 1 warship totalling 16,350 tons.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.

UB-51 – Type UB-III.  Surrendered 16th January 1919. Launched March 1917.  Sank 19 ships totalling 47,771 tons and damaging 1 ship totalling 3,905 tons.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.

UB-77 – Type UB-III.  Surrendered 16th January 1919.  Launched May 1917. Sank 1 ship totalling 14,348 tons and damaging 2 ships totalling 28,174 tons.  Broken up at Swansea 1922.
